I've been researching the types of armour that would make the visual difference between friend and foe in a medieval European-style world. I thought platemail was functionally superior to chainmail or scaled armour, but it may depend on the situation.

When I saw Ingrid's hood I was like 'nah, why you just leave it down?' So yeah, the hood kinda looks like a medieval chainmail coif so I went for the footsoldier look so he goes through the evolution line (student->footsoldier->knight)
