What is the most iconic depiction of Napoleon?
David - Napoleon crossing the alps
Gillray - Plum Pudding in Danger
Canova - Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker
Delaroche - Napoleon at Fontainebleau
Open to other suggestions (especially from Napoleon’s ‘Rod Stewart’ phase)
Executed (alas!) OTD in 1554, Lady Jane Grey. Those crazy Tudors! Always executing people. Here the tragic event as imagined by Paul Delaroche.
@mr_edward_x Paul Delaroche’s Execution of Lady Jane Grey…
Always spooked me out as a child (it was in a Where’s Wally history magazine about the Tudors I had)… then I realised as an adult it is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Don’t think any painting gives me the same feels.
“Ejecución de Lady Jane Grey” es una obra del pintor romántico francés Paul Delaroche realizada en 1833.

@MythicLore It is interesting, yes! I just looked it up to try to find the reason Delaroche painted it that way, and what I read says that he did it to cast a light upon her face and emphasize her as a Christian martyr. The painting is otherwise rather dark without it.
All is black shadow but the lucid line
Marked by the light surf on the level sand,
Or where afar the ship-lights faintly shine
Like wandering fairy fires, that oft on land
Misled the pilgrim …
