A good week for endocasts from the Silcox lab! Newly published paper led by @Remi_Allemand on the relationship between endocranial and brain morphology in squamates. https://t.co/XJ4sMxpinh
#FossilFriday Had to dig out some old data on the pterosaur Anhanguera, reminding me of our now ancient 2003 @Nature article on pterosaur brain endocasts—https://t.co/ZI1LTxe1lP. Here's some fresh 3D viz plus the cover art by Kyle McQuilkin & Ryan Ridgely that Nature didn't use.
Around 300,000 years ago, brain endocasts of Homo naledi (pink) were 50-67% the size of Indonesian Homo erectus (yellow), but anatomically they may not have been not too different #FossilFriday
Brain endocasts of immature Neandertals Engis 2 (left) and Krapina 1 (right). Although brain size of each was within the adult range of variation, similar to humans kids today, they probably still would have had lots of development left #FossilFriday
Thrilled to have this new article in @AnatRecord out today! Aetosaur brain endocasts w/ great collaborators led by Belén von Baczko & Julia Desojo. #Paleoart by @victorleshyk
Ryan Ridgely & I first scanned these @ucmpberkeley fossils many yrs ago—glad to finally get this out!

@VictoriaArbour I am describing a new pterosaur from Scotland, large 3D skeleton from Jurassic (I know, really exciting anomaly). Heaps of new palaeoart inside. And first official look at lovely, unique specimen - along with few words on endocasts & pterosaur scansoriality. 👉👈
Spent much of 2019 thinking about and trying to rebuild Neandertal brain endocasts with my students. Hoping for more of that in 2020!
