Some 18th-century alpine dragons! These wonderful creatures were described by Johann Jacob Scheuchzer in an otherwise factual account of his travels in the Swiss alps, printed in Leiden in 1723 (TCD Fag.M.4.13).

François Fagel died 4 Oct 1746. In his lifetime, the family library increased significantly. In 1723, it contained approx. 5,000 volumes.

What remains? The contains around 20,000 items!

Hendrik Fagel the younger (21 Mar 1765 - 22 Mar 1838), to avoid confiscation of his property while stranded in England as a political emigrant, shipped the family library from the Netherlands. Due to his reduced financial situation, it was put up for sale.
