We start this story in 18th century Switzerland, where Johann Scheuchzer, a prolific scholar and naturalist, studied and illustrated fossils, believing they were evidence of Biblical flood (aka, diluvialist thinking). He used natural world to illustrate the magnificence of God.
@SexyUncleDave If I type “A large priapulid worm living on the seafloor” to try and get a picture of Ottoia, it completely loses its mind. Whereas an artist can look at fossils, and look at images of living animals, and actually depict an animal. AI will never be able to do that.
-based on the known fossils, it's likely a basal coelurosaur of some kind, possibly an early tyrannosauroid! If so, it probably had many of the traits basal tyrannosauroids typically had, such as long arms with 3-fingered hands and a slim body build! (2/2)

~500 million years ago: in a relative short time of 20 million years many organisms with hard outer shells evolve, some bizarre, like Anomalocaris, some today common fossils, like trilobites

Most of the beaches are made of golden sand & are a desirable locale for wandering merchants. The more rocky parts of the beach are a haven for homeless wizards & vagrants. Washed up on the beaches are things like seashells, fossils, & coconuts.
Finally got around to updating my dragon-sona; she’s based off of several dreams & visions I’ve had of being in the deep ocean and shallow tropics. She likes to collect precious gemstones, seashells, fossils, & anything shiny or unique found on the coastline. She needs a name 😊
Other than the leviathan fossils,Hyrule is filled with other bones. While some could be hinox or molduga skeletons, the skulls that are found in lizalfos camps and the bottomless swamp are veery peculiar🤔
#Trilobites are a pretty massive group of arthropods that spanned from the early Cambrian to the Permian.. They're so common that they make excellent index fossils, meaning they can be used to date other fossils within their strata. This one is based on the genus Paradoxides!
So my job involves going to the local museum and I just lose my mind when I see the fossils, so forgive me as I be a nerd and show you the skull of a Columbiana mammoth, American lion feat. my hand (bruh), complete skeleton of a Sabre tooth cat and short faced bear🥹

Withers Bay - A small outcropping of land that juts out of the beach & overlooks the water. Back in the town's heyday it was a popular spot for large ships to dock. Now it's an empty place taken over by nature and fossils, save for some lonely houses
@Cekrophia Is possible but not necessarily, it just means the corpses were well preserved enough to fossilize
There are even some areas irl that do present a very high concentration of fossils, due to the way sediment accumulates in the ocean floor
@CPChristianLibe @pinkheretic @_CROPES_ their tails and lived in swamps, but as we found more fossils, some even complete and encased on rocks in the position they died with their bones still connected, we learned how they would have actually looked like. The same happened to hominids and all other extinct animals.

Saichania (Beautiful One) is an ankylosaurid from Late Cretaceous Mongolia! Its name is a reference to its first discovered fossils, which consists of the front half of its body, and how well-preserved they are! It's also noted to - (1/2)

April 26, 1774, birthday of German #geologist Christian Leopold von Buch. Introduced the Jurassic, the concept of guide #fossils, published some of the first geological maps & argued that the #Alps🏔 formed by magmatic intrusions 🌋

On the second voyage of HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin collected thousands of plants, animals, rocks and fossils, including 13 species of fossil mammals. Four of these were species of ground sloth. Find out more about Darwin's ground sloths https://t.co/F1K1TueNRj
