Neat paper out today by Jin-bo Hou, Nigel Hughes, and my former postdoc advisor Melanie Hopkins detailing structures showing how trilobites could clean their gills!

Figuring out how ancient creatures lived and moved is always awesome.

So you know how paleontologists use different species of ammonites/trilobites/etc as index fossils to pinpoint geological time periods?
You can now do that with people by asking them about a blue cartoon dog

Stumbled upon this wild fossil. Mimetaster hexagonalis was a marrellomorph arthropod, a distant relative of trilobites. This particular specimen was preserved in pyrite in the German Hunsrück Slate.

The Trilobites.

They’re the OG cockroaches on earth. They were everywhere and they survived 4 huge extinction events and they saw our ancestors took to land. They died alongside our reptile ancestors.
