Ken Gritz, a up and coming star passed Jan Opperman with 3 laps to go to win the 1969 Knoxville Nationals! The morning of the race while helping a fellow racer on his car he received major facial burns when the fuel tank caught fire! 16 days later he died in a crash racing.

Jerry Richert Sr. was a full time appliance service man that raced part time and managed to win some of the biggest sprint car races in the country ! Starting 13th in 1962 , Richert raced to the front to win the rained shortened Knoxville Nationals in 1962! He took no prisoners!
