Kyonpan, another lost beta Pokémon, seems to be named after kyonshi, which is the Japanese name for a Chinese hopping vampire. My favorite example of this kind of vampire in media is Hsien-Ko from Darkstalkers, so I had to give this undead panda a hat in reference to her. 🐼

TIL that Pokemon had a Jiangshi.
Kyonpan was the name; a ghost type panda.
However, they decided to scrap the design...

Which is why I angrily decided to draw it and give it an evo while at it >:'v

I’m angriest over Kyonpan, we needed more ghost types in gen 2

Lost Pokemon of the Day: the Norowara family

First revealed when Gold & Silver's 1997 demo leaked in 2018, Norowara and Kyonpan were pure Ghost-type Pokemon based on a Chinese straw doll and a Jiangshi panda.

Norowara and Kyonpan. a very interesting evolutive line. Norowara is a voodoo doll and could have given a lot of play to the curse movement, and Pangshi is a kind of panda bear with a little paper where he writes wishes.

One of the strangest evolutionary lines in Pokémon history. Norowara evolves into Kyonpan at lv. 1(!?); half their moves differ (Kyonpan is more physical). Norowara is the only 'mon who learns Nail (Curse), and it learns it at lv. 100, when it can no longer evolve!
