Little bit of style practice~ also a lil example if your midtones are dark 😅 thank you Cliff for being my model lol

I did notice that, just this white soft brush that blew out Neon's midtones (with red lips too). At the time I was like "ok, maybe it won't happen again" then it was okay Salvador Day 3 and it seemed fine!

Then LNY23 Day 2 happened, and it's so much harder to excuse, so I won't

and this is why i use pink as my canvas color! so its a neutral color for both darker and lighter colors haha makes it easier to fill in midtones, its something i picked up from doing charcoal chiaroscuros
anyway heres axort looking all fancy like!

Having some fun. I assume this is what many of us do. Quick sketch, some bony and value landmarks, Spot blacks, midtone, lighttone and a highlight to round things out. No blending. Still rough and quite a ways to go.

Doing some "three-value sketches" (highlights, midtones, shadows) for compositions for two new WW2 pieces.

Trying to get a cinematic feel that is also fairly easy to read (as I feel it'll help with my Warhammer and Star Wars job stuff down the line, too)

''Third Value'' By Sam Neilson.

Another one about focus and value hierarchy!

See how he uses the darks vs lights, shape + detail density to draw the eye to the rider, while still separating the big shapes through using midtones only.

so really rather than just blending a bunch of colors with one brush you're more layering them on whatever you're using as a flat base, blending them with the base, and using blended parts to colorpick midtones

I think this corrin portrait sets the clearest observable example?

1. base colour on alpha lock
2. pink undertone for eyes, nose, ears and fingers & knuckles
3. general shading
4. midtone shading

''Third Value'' By Sam Neilson.

Mastering the midtones:

From experience I can say that this bit of knowledge can bring a piece to the next level. I applied it a bit later in my artistic journey than I wanted, but I am happy I understand it now.

Hope its of use!

YEAH! Actually! I'm finishing up a kid's book called "Sell Me a Story", these few pages, I'm going to add some scales in the midtones of the dragon and create wood planks for this boat.

It's interesting but most textures exist in the mid-tones.

I'll also put today's piece next to the underpainting (namely a Gradient Map overtop my value sketch). Focuses on cooler midtones, that way adding the warm pops of lights and darks really sell both the warms and the cools with not much extra effort

Slapped a new banner together ✨️
I realized my 📸 graphy tends 2b electric pinks, purples n blues. But my drawings lately have been very midtone heavy with cyan n dustiness?

Do I have a style yet? Lol

I'm really torn about the way to finish and make the whole picture "pop" more. Seelys' legs are midtone and I feel I shouls either let them recede into obscurity much more or add clothing to them too and make them stand out more from the backgroung.

I added a redder midtone and just kinda moved some markings around, I hope this can help!! :3
