If you don't mind fantasy species, it seems a Behemoth would fit your style quite well. Though its coloration (mostly shades of purple) and amount of horns/webbing varies between FF games (and even Kingdom Hearts), it's largely kept the same head structure and musculature.

Here are a few pieces from my senior year(2015). I drew a lot of figures from photographs to familiarize myself with anatomy, as well as studies of skeletons and musculature. I needed to work on proportions. I was also not drawing animals as often as I used to.
