This 1776 print from the NYSM's History Collection is titled, "La destruction de la statue royale a Nouvelle Yorck.” It depicts the moment when, following the reading of the Declaration of Independence, a group of New Yorkers physically pulled down the statue of King George.
The mural, Charter Making by David C. Lithgow, was displayed in the NY Building at the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, NY. The mural was later transferred to the NYSM where it was on display until 1976. NYSM staff are working to get this mural conserved and put back on display.
NYSM scientists are investigating a tortuous meltwater path created over 16,000 years ago in, around & over folded & eroded limestone, shale, & sandstone near Ravena, NY. Left behind was a complex landscape created by overlapping geologic processes over a long period of time.
These early 19th century women's bathing suits were recently donated to the NYSM History Collections from the Stiles & Sherman family. The form-fitting black suit, made popular by Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, was considered to be the first "modern swimsuit" for women.
#ScienceTuesday: Mineralogy
Dr. Steven Chamberlain donated a collection of specimens from the Balmat Mining District in St. Lawrence County, NY. The NYSM now has the most complete & significant Balmat mineral collection that can be used for exhibitions, research, & education.
