7 Aug 1742, Warwick, RI. Nathanael Greene was born. Arguably Gen Washington's most competent & dependable officer he served as a general for all eight years of the war, as a division commander, Quartermaster general & Commander of the Southern Department.

6 Aug 1780, Benedict Arnold wrote to Gen Washington of the conditions at West Point, a command he would soon seek to hand over to the British. He complained of the quality of the troops and their condition, fearing desertion.

6 Aug 1777 Oriskany NY, A relief force of Patriot militia and Oneida allies marching on Ft Stanwix is ambushed by Loyalist & 6 Nations Iroquois Indian allies. Close to 1/2 of the patriots were killed, Gen Nicholas Herkimer is mortally wounded.

25 Jul 1775 Cambridge, MA The first of the Pennsylvania Rifle companies under Capt Michael Doudel of York, PA arrives. The rifle companies were the 1st Continental Army units authorized by Congress & would play an important role in future engagements.

19 Jul 1779 Minisink, NY Hoping to divert American forces under Gen James Clinton from attacking the Six Nations Territory, Chief Joseph Brant’s force of Loyalists & Mohawks stage a diversionary attack on the settlement & gather food & booty.

15-16 July 1779 The British stronghold, Little Gibraltar, falls when Continental Army’s Light Infantry led by Gen Anthony Wayne capture Stony Point in a bold bayonet attack. British suffer over 130 casualties & 500 captured vs less than 100 casualties.

20 Jun 1779 at Stono Ferry, SC. Gen Benjamin Lincoln leads 1400 men across the Ashley River & attacks the British rear guard under Lt Col John Maitland. Strong defenses and firm resistance drive back the rebels with over 300 casualties vs some 125 British.

20 Jun 1776 New York. Col Rufus Putnam directs the construction of a fort at the northern tip of the Island of New York (Manhattan). Ft Washington rose over 200 feet above the North (Hudson) River but had many deficiencies.
