Beta alanine and l glutamine, trying again with a tiny bit of food coloring, seems to affect the crystal growth in addition to tinting the polarized colors.

Day 18

After my break, I took up a postdoc position in the same place where I did my PhD. It allowed me to carry on teaching (which I really enjoy), got me back in the modelling lab and left just enough time to start conjuring new research ideas...

Day 16

I apologise for the lack of fun fact about my work as a scientist today - It was a really busy day. Maybe that’s the fact, most scientists are overstretched (?)

Day 14

I led virtual labs for the 1st time this summer & made some graphics to help teach the basics! ☀️🤓 I'm eternally grateful for online resources like , , & https://t.co/Ka4RI9NvnH without which I would have been lost!

Day 14

One of the "missing pieces" in our understanding of the development of the South Atlantic was how oceanic depth changed over time. Part of my PhD focused on developing a workflow to produce detailed paleobathymetric reconstructions from plate models

Day 10

...only to realise that a graduate job after my MSc "didn't feel right". Not without a lot of drama for various reasons, but eventually I was very lucky to secure a funded PhD and be able to do "what felt right" at that point, change directions

0 4

Malic acid crystals under polarized light microscopy, an intermediate compound in the krebs/citric acid cycle, metabolic chemical reactions that break down proteins, fats, and carbs to release energy.

22 72

Succinic Acid under polarized microscopy, its involved in several areas of metabolism, production of some polyesters and resins, and is also a food additive.
