The Language Of Seabirds (YA)

A sweet, tender story of two boys finding first love with each other over a seaside summer. This touching story also touches on important themes of having to handle family dissolution and toxic masculinity.

Common tern casting a shadow in the water - I don’t often use pastels, but they’re occasionally useful to cover up a mess. Might need a click for full image

Not seabirds for a change, but some of the most well-loved birds! With their less-conventional identifying features…

A silly seabird Sunday - the score-morant. Closely related to the cormorant, but better at sport. Apart from fishing.

Unexpected treat today when distant ‘gulls’ suddenly started spearheading into the sea and I realised they were gannets. Far away off Hartlepool seafront but still magnificent to watch

Little terms at Seaton yesterday - presumably a female standing on the beach as her mate flew up to her and passed her a little fish

One of my favourite designs is one that only appears in the background, and that's the adult Alcione! I love how much they look like seabirds, and the blue faces are beautiful!! So here's my take on them, I'd love to see them in more detail in the future!

Between breeding events, Sooty take a year off. Using geolocators and satellite transmitters, we now know where this species goes when it's not breeding on Island.

Living in Derbyshire, I don't get to see many of these beautiful birds but a trip to Northumbria gave me chance to sketch a few for painting. Love their beady red eyes. Oil on canvas board.
