RAF Scampton has lots of important heritage. It's not only 617 Squadron folks. Pics of 49 Squadron with a Hampden Oct 1941 and airmen and a WAAF with a bus Sept 1942. @SuellaBraverman @ukhomeoffice @RobertJenrick @HE_ChiefExec @EdwardLeighMP @karlmccartney @Hamish4Lincs https://t.co/kv9SDXjnHm

For #NationalUnderwearDay I'm going to celebrate the fleecy blue knickers issued to the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (#WAAF) in #WW2 - they were nicknamed Blackouts and Passion Killers, and were generally a source of ridicule #KittedOut https://t.co/qKzEZ9zuKI
‘There is not much you can do to make a WAAF’s uniform sexy (apart from pulling your belt in till you can hardly breathe), ', wrote Joan Wyndham, despite the poster. 'But jumping up and down on your cap to loosen up the brim does help to give it a rakish air.’ #KittedOut #ww2
One of my favourite women featured in new book #KittedOut is bohemian Joan Wyndham, who served as a #WAAF in #WW2. ‘I can’t describe the effect wings have on a WAAF,’ she wrote of the RAF uniform. ‘Our theme song should really be “If I Only Had Wings”.’ https://t.co/kylkFJYUT7
#VEDay #VEDay2020 “In the UK there were over 640,000 women in the armed forces, including The Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS)...

@alexthepink Bombs & Blackberries by Julia Donaldson (illustrated version by @TDIllustration). What Are We Fighting For? by @moses_brian & @PoetryZone would be good to begin looking at WW2-themed poetry for your 7yo. Tail-End Charlie & Taff in the WAAF are excellent picture books too.
Mum and dad married in December 1940. 6 weeks later dad was posted to Egypt then Italy - they didn't see each other for 4 1/2 years! They were married for almost 67 years. We had many Sunday lunch stories about their war years. RAMC then General Service (I think) and WAAF ❤️
