A very Merry to all who celebrate, may your Wassail cup overflow with mead and spices!

Day 11 Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green,
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Working with Outlaw design agency I created the artwork for cider packaging.

Here’s their seasonal Wassail Mulled Cider, with snowy weathervane & branches.

Mari Lwyd is a wassailing custom of South Wales; a decorated horse skull over a sack cloth. The men would carry her to local homes, where they would request entry through song and banter. If successful, the team would be permitted entry and given food and drink.

The Queen on Old Twelfth Night (17 Jan) was often a child. She would knock on the trunk of the oldest tree in the orchard & ask the fertility spirit within, known as the Apple Tree Man, “to awake”. She then placed cider-soaked bread in its branches.

"...the bards and harpers assembled in ancient days at this time of wassail... the tale and the song are amongst the spirits that wait on Christmas still, and charm the long winter evenings with their yet undiminished spells."

Smoking Bishop is a type of mulled wine, punch or wassail. It was especially popular in Victorian England at Christmas time and it is mentioned in Dickens' story A Christmas Carol.

In Wales there is a wassailing folk custom using a macabre hobby horse called the Mari Lwyd. The festive horse skeleton travels door-to-door and challenges people to “pwnco” a rhyming battle of wits.
