The army advanced past the Mahratta guns, many crews of which had "played" dead & remanned their guns, causing casualties from the rear.

Eventually they were put down & the last pockets of Infantry fled.

Wellesley's army had 428 killed & 1,156 wounded for 6,000+ enemy.

Today on 23rd Sept 1803 General Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, lead the British attack at the Battle of Assaye during the Second Maratha War, opening the way for the British conquest of Central India.

A sombre 14 September 1852, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington passed away at Walmer Castle, he was 83 years old.

He had likely suffered a series of strokes overnight & his condition deteriorated.

He was moved from his bed to a chair where he expired at 3pm.

Near disaster the French night attack before Talavera, 27 July 1809

Surprised, the 87th & 88th Regiments fell back, although the 60th stood firm.

Wellesley rode forward, withdrawing the 24th, 31st & 45th Regiments, where they drove back the advancing French columns.

The French force held the heights of Grijó, south of Porto.

Wellesley skirmished forward, with KGL, Portuguese, also Light Infantry & 95th Rifles from the Battalion of Detachments.

The pressure threatened the French flanks.

It is understood that the new Irish Viceroy (Lord Lieutenant), Marquess Wellesley (pictured) offered William Saurin the role of chief justice for common pleas, heading one of Dublin's 'four courts'. When Mr Saurin turned down the role, he was dismissed from the government.
