Meet the extraordinary woman, Mary Wollstonecraft (1759–1797). Author and advocate of women’s rights, Mary Wollstonecraft arrived in Bath in 1778 at the age of nineteen. Mary died in 1797, a few days after the birth of her second daughter, Mary Shelley.

Today our extraordinary woman is Mary Shelley (1797–1848), daughter of women’s rights advocate and writer, Mary Wollstonecraft. Between 1816 and 1817, Shelley worked on her novel Frankenstein in Bath. In 1818 the novel was published anonymously in London.

There are many images that illustrate Wollstonecraft’s quote above quite beautifully, but I decided to go with Moonlight on the Blackwater in Ireland (not an exact title), a drawing by Paul Sandby (1730–1809). Another one of Sandby’s I almost used is Music by Moonlight.
