He was an Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army. He became one of the most influential and admired British generals after a series of successes in Canada, West Africa and Egypt.

The MG Magnette's 'flawless sporting pedigree' and 'celebrated Safety Fast roadholding' were emphasised. One problem for MG was that the body, despite some mild styling changes, was shared with the more humble Morris Oxford and Austin Cambridge (plus Wolseley and Riley versions).

Stately Pininfarina styling ushered in the last of Wolseley's big cars in 1959. The 2.9-litre 6/99 (later uprated to 6/110) was marketed as 'the choice of the professional man'. In true BMC tradition it shared a body with Austin and Vanden Plas siblings.

Once proudly independent, Riley had been fully subsumed into BMC by the mid-50s, but kept its 'For magnificent motoring' catchphrase. The body of the One-Point-Five (and its plainer single-carb twin, the Wolseley 1500) was originally penned as a possible Morris Minor successor.

Here's that view (featuring the Australian Austin Lancer, which used the Wolseley/Riley body).

Amazingly the Onix Marfy wasn't the only retro-pastiche model based on the Mazda Carol. Buyers could also opt for Mitsuoka's version, the Ray, with apparently Wolseley-inspired styling details.

Hand coloured print of the battle of Goojerat 1849

With his replacement steaming with all haste from England Sir Hugh Gough manages to regain some lost pride with this final victory of the 2nd Anglo-Sikh war. Shades of Chelmsford and Wolseley 30 years later.

The late '90s Mitsuoka Ray in this Japanese brochure has a front end seemingly inspired by the badge-engineered Wolseley cars made by BMC in the 1950s and 60s. It was actually just a significantly modified 660cc Mazda Carol kei car.

I've shared each of these car illustrations individually recently, but here's how they were put together into a logo for a new car hire company
