As America celebrates #minersday today,it's a chance to think about how the coal industry has shaped the landscape and culture here in Wales as well inspiring artists, including Josef Herman who was inspired by the mining community in South Wales whilst he lived in Ystradgynlais.
@GrimArtGroup @MurrMarie I really Polish exile Josef Herman. He worked just up the valley in Ystradgynlais from 1944. His paintings of miners & the village, where my grandmother was from, are very special. The huge Miners mural was displayed at the Festival of Britain in 1951.
Being from South Wales, Caryl Roese was first introduced to Welsh Paintings per se by the Polish artist Josef Herman who she knew as a child in Ystradgynlais. Learn how the Roese Collection of Contemporary Welsh Paintings developed in her guest blog post - https://t.co/FY7m5zSDIG
The renowned Polish-born artist Josef Herman escaped persecution during the Holocaust and moved to Ystradgynlais, a mining community in South Wales, in 1944. Many of his works are held at the Library. #HolocaustMemorial https://t.co/LCx5lxxrCb
