Today I’m going to share #maps from a 17C copy of Piri Reis’ Kitab-Bahriye, a collection of information about various islands and coastlines in #Ottoman #Turkish. Here, for example, are the coastlines by #Ayvalık (Tavuk Island), that of #Thessaloniki, and #Lesbos/Midilli.
For #iyil2019, a reminder that we continue to build our holdings of #books in #IndigenousLanguages from #Turkic communities across #Russia. These items are #Chuvash, and our #library routinely buys publications in Sakha, Tuvan, Tatar, Bashkir and other Turkic languages.
Another #Christian #Arabic #manuscript for your #FridayThoughts. These are the #sermons of Ignatius Shukrullah (Or. 2323), copied in 1801 CE during the Lenten season. Apart from the #calligraphy and sparse #illumination, I love the parental advice included in the #colophon.
@TantanW The ones with the little leaf as a wash cloth on their heads.
We’ve also got lots of #astronomy on order: #star charts, the #Zodiac, the phases of the #moon. They provide a view to the names of the stars, Zodiac signs and #planets in #Arabic and #Syriac, as well as an indication of the links between #science and #religion.
Finally, a look at lands much further away: #CentralAsia; northern #India; #Siberia and #Tatarstan (note how the map marks #Tatar tribes by name); and finally a map of #Indonesia and the #Philippines. #Hainan is pretty prominent up in the north.
