Ermine was tucked up in bed reading Katherine Mansfield. The windows were open & she could hear her neighbour's music, snatches carrying faintly on the breeze. "When it rains five days and the skies turn dark as night...Backwater blues done call me to pack my things and go."

The Sea Otter's comfortable cottage had been built in 1905. It had a lovely wide balcony on the second floor, with a view of the estuary as it flowed slow into the sea. He always took his morning coffee there (black, strong as night) & watched the boats passing far below.

Old Fox had gone back up into the attic to find a rose-papered box he hadn't opened for 32 years. It contained letters & photographs, a watch & some ties & sprigs of dried larkspur. The delicate mementos of a dear friend, taken too young by another grasping virus, in another age.

Wolf was as angry as the storm raging across the fields. He lashed out at Old Fox, raining blows & trying to bite him, but Old Fox stayed calm & waited it out. Afterwards, grasping his tea, Wolf cried & said I don't remember why I was upset, I don't remember anything at all.
