Old Fox walked up in the snow, in the keening wind, until he stood, quite alone, under a vast mariner's sky, at the chapel of St Nicholas. To the east, lights flickered & bobbed in the harbour & before him tumbled the Winged Horse, starry hooves flicking the dark Atlantic waves.

Somewhere in Dorset, in a lime-washed parlour, all the oil lamps are blazing & the room is awhirl with reels & polkas & jogs, & the cider is flowing & the bellowing sea & dark shingle & whip-cold wind are shut stoutly out.
The Squirrel was visiting from Northumberland. She was exhausted, spirits low from what she felt was a very bleak socio-political landscape. Old Fox took her paw & told her to rest first, then begin her fight once more, & he made her Singin’ hinnies on the griddle over the fire.

The Wolf was up by the juniper trees on Barrow Down, staring at the great blanched moon. It's named after you, Fox had told him. Named after me, he said. And he howled up to his moon & the moon replied with her old salt-thick secrets of ebb & flow, of slack water & high tide.
It was a dark morning & the wind was roaring up on Barrow Down. The Fox had been up for hours. He was baking a birthday cake to an old West Dorset recipe with cottage apples & buttercream. On top, he placed fondant oak leaves & acorns & blackberries, & candles of fine beeswax.
An unloved girl put on her cloak & went to the river. She waded into the icy water, but was tugged back by a wolf, who told her to live. He found her strong medicine, rooms with a kind family, hearty food & the deep constancy of love from a dying old wolf. #FairyTaleTuesday
