Eyvind Earle's (1916-2000) sculptural winter scenes, rooted in Renaissance landscape vignettes. Earle was in charge of production design for Sleeping Beauty (1959), successfully manifesting Disney's dream of the film as a moving illustration.

Five Dresses for New Year's Eve.

1. A faded, tattered larkspur ballgown from 1856. For nursing a fragile glass of Parfait Amour & Rose Hip syrup, then rushing, shivering, into the melting snow, to hear the bells calling from valley to valley all the way to the Black Mountains.

Christmas Eve. Led by the Mouse, carol singers gather by the ivy outside Old Fox's cottage, their lantern bright in the frory darkness. Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht, they sing in German & far, far above the earth, two solemn Angels pause in their high & holy business to listen.

23rd Day of Advent. First Christmas without her beloved & the Ermine rose early. As the morning star blazed white, she walked up high to the old fort & remade her pledge to the waterlines, to the birds & the sea beyond: to live with fire & courage, with purpose & adamantine love.

21st Day of Advent. 8 am, Kichijōji, Tokyo. The kindly Baku is very tired & is walking home through the snow. He has been on all call all night & has eaten 371 children's nightmares. Monsters & ghosties & bullies & earthquakes & snakes & scary teachers & cruel fathers all gone.
