@annaedwardsart @studiousgal @courtclinton @ROMtoronto As promised, here is an entire wall of touristy but sublime paintings of 🇨🇦Niagara Falls @ROMtoronto. The detail is from Hippolyte Victor Valentin Sebron’s ‘Table Rock’ 1850. Not known to Europe until 1604, called the Onguiaahra by the indigenous peoples. Majestic & iconic!
These two ladies may be the cover girls for the exhibition catalogue but I’m drawn to the courtesans’ faces on the Chinese vase: such brilliant economy of brushwork. 🖼: ‘Ena & Betty, Daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Wertheimer,’ 1901 @NatMus_SWE, on loan from @Tate #JohnSingerSargent
🎉 🎂 Joyeux anniversaire #FrançoisBoucher, born #otd in 1705. Pictured: ‘Les Sabots’ 1768 @agotoronto . Another snapshot from the #Rococo master’s “bucolic never-never land.” Painted just after the premiere of the opéra-comique ‘Les Sabots’ by M-J Sedaine & J. Cazotte🎶
🎉🎂A BIG HAPPY EXUBERANT birthday to the Flemish #Baroque master, #PeterPaulRubens -born #OTD in 1577 (Siegen, Westphalia). 🖼: One of his most striking portraits, ‘Four Studies of a Head of a Moor’ 1614 @FineArtsBelgium. Can’t help marvelling at its *contemporary* feel. #Rubens
🤪Happy Friday! Pictured: ‘Drunken Silenus Supported by Satyrs’ c.1620. “Possibly” by Anthony #vanDyck. Definitely a riot of fun. @NationalGallery . According to @Gregoire_Ichou , the reed instrument depicted is an aulos 🎶
😀#MusicMonday🎶 Another variation on a theme by #Renoir: ‘Two Young Girls at the Piano’ (1892). The pianist’s parted mouth (as if in song) and hand on the sheet music underscore her active engagement in the music: charming.
@TheArtNewspaper @staedelmuseum @MuseeLouvre @hermitage_eng The *evidence*: #Rubens: ‘Self-Portrait in a Circle of Friends from Mantua’ c.1606 @ #WallrafRichartzMuseum:
@RobertaStellon @thewhitecompany I personally prefer #mmm to #hmmm: marshmallow mattress!
😀#MusicMonday🎶 ‘La Musique. Portrait de Monsieur de La Bretêche’ 1769 by #Fragonard. Putting the monies aside, the treasurer/accountant of Tours strikes a pose in a troubadour costume. 📷c/o @HammockAuthor Previously on loan from @MuseeLouvre to @ngadc #FragonardFantasy #Rococo
😀#MusicMonday🎶 A pretty pastoral scene by #FrançoisBoucher based on the opéra-comique, ‘Les Sabots’ 1768. Here, Babet the farmgirl teases Colin the shepherd🍒 Libretto by Cazotte & Sedain with music by Duni. 🎀#rococo
