August 17, 1839: Dutch artist Matthijs Maris is born.
Despite helping found the Hague School with his two brothers, Matthijs himself eventually drifted away from its classically realistic style, embracing a softer, more modern approach. He died 5 days after his 78th birthday. 🎨
August 2, 1788: English portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough dies.
At only 13, he worked as an assistant to French artist Hubert Gravelot in London. In 1768, he became a member of the Royal Academy.

July 24, 1860: Czech painter and illustrator Alphonse Mucha is born.
Mucha's gorgeous Art Nouveau designs, with their lovely ladies and colourful flourishes, were a staple of the advertising world. His distinctive style is instantly recognizable.

Name sound familiar? It should. Orazio is father to famous female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose birthday was yesterday!
From 1626 onward, he was court painter to King Charles I.

The architect designed Cardinal Valenti's villa and the chapel in Santa Maria della Scala. The painter is praised for his exquisite depictions of ancient and modern Roman topography.
