I feel that the HC Monsters get overlooked a lot in favor of the many monsters that appeared in G - Z.

In terms of lore, their materials did give hints as to what caused them to change (Old age, taking better care of themselves, etc.).

While I never played Frontier, I found the HC Monsters to be a pretty cool way to make some monsters more dangerous and a way to add more value to existing monsters (Some HC Monsters stood out more than others).
