As tropical storm watches get issued for provinces >50 deg N, you may be wondering how. Partly because North Atlantic SSTs are smashing records. This is part of a trend (see fig 1 https://t.co/qF9XLVIIvD). fueled by SSTs 10 deg F > average!

Over the last week, SSTs have increased by about 2-3 degrees Celsius off the SW coast of and are now 3+ deg C above 1981-2010 mean. This anomaly likely adds 12-18 hours more time for to intensify in an area that is traditionally very hostile for typhoons
