Happy 65th birthday to the great John Totleben! His SWAMP THING (w/Moore & Bissette) in the 80s turned the comics world on its head, and he turned in equally wonderful work on MIRACLEMAN. His struggles with his eyesight make him a hero on his own. Have a wonderful day, John!

The pioneer in "biomechanics," Swiss artist H.R. Giger was born OTD in 1940. His designs for ALIEN lifted him to pop cultural heights, and his art appeared everywhere. Here's his cover for Debbie Harry's KOO KOO, leading many retailers to refuse to display it. He died in 2014.

Remembering Betty Ballantine (BOTD in 1919), the publishing legend who - with her husband Ian - founded both Bantam and Ballantine Books, and release some of the finest fantasy/SF books of the century. She died just shy of her 100th birthday.

THE JETSONS debuted on ABC OTD 60 years ago, the first show on the network to be telecast in color from its premiere. Although it lasted only one season, its 24 episodes would be rerun for years. A Gold Key comic appeared weeks later and ran 36 issues. "Meet George Jetson..."
