At issue's end, Wein comes full circle, referencing the final panel of the HOUSE OF SECRETS story that introduced the character. Whenever I think of Len's writing, it is the first line that springs to mind.

Wes Craven would have been 81 today. In 1971 he wrote this text story for DC's first issue of DARK MANSION OF FORBIDDEN LOVE.

7/20/76:

"Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you once knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever -- I am PHOENIX!"

7/17/73: More Man-Thing goodness on the magazine rack as MONSTERS UNLEASHED sports a cover among 's favorites (he likes drawing ladies with ripped blouses, and the monster is intentionally non-threatening). The MT tale is a reprint, but there are 3 new stories.

7/15/75: More Gerber weirdness this week as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Starhawk guest star in DEFENDERS positing mysteries that will have to wait for Gerber and Milgrom's GUARDIANS book. And yes, these shall always be my Guardians.

7/8/75: MARVEL CHILLERS hits newsstands, introducing Modred the Mystic; sometimes a good guy, sometimes not. He gets two issues to strut his stuff before he's replaced by Tigra. "I am Modred...and I am a MYSTIC!"

Christmas! Whether as inker or on full pencils, Billy Graham's Luke Cage was dynamic. A few splashes:

7/1/75: It's an all-SF issue of CREEPY as featured a killer lineup and clearly sold well enough for Warren to consider a regular SF book. (Unfortunately it was the crass and offensive 1984.) Jim Stenstrum & Rich Corben's "Unprovoked Attack on a Hilton Hotel" was a delight.
