My favourite C64 Shoot ‘em ups – No.21
Mutants
Ocean 1987
Cool, psychedelic graphics, fantastic Fred Gray SIDs, superbly designed & very original, Mutants is a bit of a forgotten gem. Challenging & compelling, it’s a reminder that Ocean published some highly innovative titles.

Killerwatt
Alligata 1983
This early Tony Crowther game is a zippy zapper with nice animation, smooth scrolling & great gameplay. It was the favourite game of my old mucker and C64 buddy Mick, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
Since Space Invaders, shoot em ups have been a staple of videogaming, & in the 80s the genre was massively popular. With its scrolling & sprite capabilities, the C64 was the perfect platform for a shooter & it hosted dozens of brilliant ones during its heyday. Here are my Top 20.
My favourite C64 Sports Sims – No.1
International Soccer
Commodore 1983
My first ever C64 game had me head over heels in love with this brilliant computer from day one. Astounding in 1983, it’s still fantastically playable today. One of my all-time favourites & a true classic.

Emlyn Hughes International Soccer
Audiogenic 1988
EHIS took the Commodore classic, added tons of options, refined the graphics & gameplay, added the ability to name your own players (loads of fun!) & came up with a fantastic new footy game.
My favourite C64 Sports Sims – No.10
Super Sunday
Nexus 1985
I loved Gridiron, but most attempts to make a computer game of it failed miserably. The first good one was this – an excellent sim with a well-balanced combination of strategy and action. Just like the real thing.
My favourite C64 Sports Sims – No.12
Summer Games
Epyx 1984
Another game inspired by the '84 Olympics, Summer Games is the 1st of the legendary Epyx ‘Games’ series. A class act with outstanding presentation & graphics for 1984, & more varied gameplay than most Olympics games.
My favourite C64 Sports Sims – No.13
Decathlon 1984
Activision
Released in time for the '84 LA Olympics, David Crane’s Decathlon is a joystick annihilator - esp. the 1500M! With big, lovely, brilliantly animated sprites & superb gameplay, it’s incredibly impressive for 1984.
My favourite C64 Sports Sims – No.14
International Basketball
Commodore 1984
Andrew Spencer adapted International Soccer for basketball and came up with another cracking sports game. Visually and sonically very similar to I.S. it also shares the same superb playability.
