The USS Monitor was commissioned in 1862, under the command of Lt. John L. Worden. Within two weeks, she would participate in the first ever naval battle between two ironclad warships, facing off against the confederate ship Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads.

Saxton in turn named his friend Col. Thomas W. Higginson as commander of the newly raised regiment, which proved very effective at conducting coastal raids. Harriet Tubman briefly served with the unit in South Carolina, first as a cook and nurse, then as a spy, and scout.

Once it became clear this was the entire confederate force, Canby led the rest of the Ft. Craig garrison to reinforce Roberts. Initially, Canby’s men had the upper hand, including repelling the first and only lancer charge of the war, made by a company of Texas mounted infantry.

Continuing his service with the 6th Infantry Regiment, Armistead was sent to several western posts, ultimately commanding a garrison in San Diego. He became good friends with Winfield Scott Hancock, who also served with the 6th Infantry.

Lewis Armistead was born in 1817 in New Bern, NC, into a distinguished military family. His father and four uncles served during the War of 1812. His uncle George Armistead commanded during the battle that led to the writing of The Star Spangled Banner.

After the war, Mulholland returned to Philadelphia, where he became Chief of the . He later served as United States Pension Agent, and wrote a history of the 116th Pennsylvania. He also studied art, and was an accomplished painter.

After the war, Logan was elected to Congress again, and then to the U.S. Senate from Illinois. He was instrumental in the creation of Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day. He died in 1886, and is buried in the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery.

The initial assault on the morning of April 6th was successful, driving Grant’s men back to the river. While leading a charge during the afternoon, Johnston was shot behind his right knee. He didn’t think the wound was serious at first, but soon slumped from his saddle.

In September, 1862, Wilder commanded a brigade of 4,000 men at Munfordville, KY, when the town was surrounded by over 22,000 confederates. Wilder refused to surrender for three days until given a tour of the strong confederate lines. He was held prisoner for two months.

Because wealthy slave owners disapproved of the Amendment since it didn't compensate them for their lost "property", the state of Mississippi didn't ratify the Amendment until 1995. It was another 18 years before they filed the appropriate paperwork with in 2013.
