After returning to Missouri due to an illness, Fletcher recovered to lead two regiments at the Battle of Pilot Knob, MO, during Sterling Price’s Missouri Raid in the Fall of 1864. Later that Fall, Fletcher successfully ran for election as the Governor of Missouri.
The Neptune was damaged and sunk, but the Bayou City managed to capture the USS Harriet Lane. Another U.S. vessel, the USS Westfield, ran aground. As they attempted to scuttle the ship, Commander Renshaw and several others were killed when the explosives detonated too soon.
She had been launched only 11 months earlier under the command of Lt. John Worden, and had revolutionized warship design with her steel hull and rotating gun turret.

Seaver’s award was the result of his gallant actions during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. The commander of the 3rd Vermont Infantry, he was chosen by Gen. Emory Upton to lead three other regiments of The Vermont Brigade during the U.S. assault on the Mule Shoe salient.
As Forrest approached Lexington, Colonel Robert Ingersoll attempted to stop his advance with less than 700 men. He ordered the bridge over Beech Creek destroyed, so he could concentrate his smaller force at the one crossing left available to Forrest.
Discovered on the river bottom in 1956, she was raised in late 1964. A partial restoration was approved in 1972, and she is now on display to the public as the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum at @VicksburgNPS.
Some of the first urban warfare in Americn history had taken place during the crossing, as U.S. infantry rowed across the river and went house to house clearing out confederate sharpshooters. Much of the town was then flattened by U.S. artillery.
At the Battle of the Crater in 1864, Ferrero commanded the 4th Division of IX Corps, comprised mostly of several regiments of US Colored Troops. After that failed attack, Ferrero was widely criticized for failing to lead his men, reportedly remaining in the rear drinking rum.
