Davis asked around for a pistol and was given one by a friend. He went directly to Nelson’s office, found him standing in front if it, raised the pistol and shot him in the chest. The bullet tore through Nelson’s heart, and he died within 30 minutes.
Semmes eluded capture, and ultimately made his way back to Texas via Cuba. As the war came to a close, he briefly commanded a naval brigade of sailors whose ships and been scuttled. They saw little action and surrendered with the rest of Joseph Johnston’s army in North Carolina.
After the death of General James McPherson during the Atlanta Campaign, General William T. Sherman appointed Slocum to command the new XX Corps, which included the troops of his old XII Corps. He and his men were the first to enter Atlanta when it fell.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Slocum was made Colonel of the 27th New York Infantry. He led the regiment at the First Battle of Bull Run (@ManassasNPS), where he was wounded. Promoted to Brigadier General, Slocum commanded a division of VI Corps during the Seven Days Battles.
Having studied law during his service, Slocum resigned his commission in 1856 and began a law practice in Syracuse. He also served in the New York State Assembly, and was a Colonel and artillery instructor in the New York State Militia.
Sheridan moved quickly, striking Early with two Corps totaling about 40,000 men. Early was outnumbered nearly 4-to-1, and though the fighting was fierce, he ultimately had to withdraw. Winchester, which changed hands 75 times during the #CivilWar, never left U.S. control again.
Bragg was caught off guard, but quickly began feeding divisions and brigades piecemeal into the fight. Gen. William Rosecrans did the same, and the two armies battled back and forth in the fields and woods surrounding the Brock and Brotherton farms for the rest of the day.
