Foote was promoted to Commodore, and received the Thanks of Congress twice for leading his flotilla in the Battles of Fort Henry, @FortDonelsonNPS and Island Number Ten. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in late 1862.
The defenders had placed stakes in the channels, allowing them to range in all of their guns. Their fire was incredibly accurate, raking the U.S. gunboats and forcing the USS Clifton and Sachem to surrender. Over 350 casualties were suffered, against none for the defenders.
General William Rosecrans was born #OTD in 1819. A graduate of @WestPoint_USMA, he secured several critical victories for the U.S. in the Western Theater of the #CivilWar, including the Battles of Iuka, Corinth, and @StonesRiverNPS.
Jesse James, the notorious western outlaw, was born #OTD in 1847. Before his criminal career, James served in several confederate guerrilla bands during the #CivilWar, and participated in two of its most infamous war crimes, the Centralia Massacre and Quantrill’s Lawrence Raid.
Gist graduated from South Carolina College (now @UofSC), then attended @Harvard_Law for a year before returning home to open his own law practice. After his return, Gist became active in the state militia, leading a company and serving as aide-de-camp of Governor James H. Adams.
One brigade of infantry under Gen. James Ricketts and a regiment of cavalry under Col. Percy Wyndham were outnumbered more than 5-to-1 by Longstreet’s corps. After pushing back the cavalry, Longstreet held the high ground, and used the position to pour fire down on Rickett’s men.
Berry commanded the regiment at the First Battle of Bull Run (@ManassasNPS). Soon after, he was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of a full brigade in III Corps, which he led during the Peninsula Campaign.
Bvt Brig. General Frederick Benteen was born in 1834. He served in the Western Theater during the war, rising to Colonel and commanding a regiment of US Colored Troops. A Captain under Custer, he survived the battle, but was widely criticized for failing to come to Custer’s aid.
