Cushing was the younger brother of Lt. Alonzo Cushing, a @USArmy officer who was killed at the Battle of @GettysburgNMP, dying at his artillery battery during Pickett’s Charge. In 2014, 151 years after his death, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor as well.
During the #CivilWar, Forrest fought against the United States, commanding confederate cavalry in the western theater. He was responsible for the infamous Fort Pillow massacre, in which his men murdered hundreds of unarmed, surrendering black soldiers of the @USArmy.
He turned to politics, and counted on war fatigue and the support of his former troops to win the Presidency in 1864. His plan failed, and he won only three states and 21 electoral votes as Lincoln routed him for a second term. (@ALPLM)
Saxton in turn named his friend Col. Thomas W. Higginson as commander of the newly raised regiment, which proved very effective at conducting coastal raids. Harriet Tubman briefly served with the unit in South Carolina, first as a cook and nurse, then as a spy, and scout.
Within the next two months, Brown was tried, found guilty of treason and murder, and hanged. His raid and planned rebellion was viewed by Southerners as a prelude to more aggressive actions to end slavery, contributing to the push for secession and, ultimately, the #CivilWar.
Before the war, Keyes was a respected career @USArmy officer. A @WestPoint_USMA graduate, he;d served as an instructor at his alma mater in artillery and cavalry tactics. He’d also seen significant action in the Pacific Northwest against Native American tribes.
Lomax’s brigade tried to hold Auburn while Jeb Stuart moved his larger cavalry force east to scout and possibly attack a large Union wagon train. Seeing he was facing two Union corps, Lomax withdrew. This forced Stuart to hide his men in a wooded ravine for the night.
Leonidas Polk, commanding Bragg’s right wing, ordered his men forward mid-afternoon. After an initial standstill and heavy casualties on both sides, the Union line began to give way. They re-grouped at a series of hills and ridges, eventually halting the confederate advance.
Warren’s initial attack, led by General Charles Griffin’s division, was successful, capturing Fort Archer before Warren ordered a halt to regroup. Confederate counterattacks followed for much of the next two days, but the U.S. held the position and extended their siege lines.
Davis asked around for a pistol and was given one by a friend. He went directly to Nelson’s office, found him standing in front if it, raised the pistol and shot him in the chest. The bullet tore through Nelson’s heart, and he died within 30 minutes.
