Winslow ordered Kearsage to clear French waters before running up the US Navy Jack and turning to face the confederate ship. The Alabama fired the first shots, to no effect, and continued firing rapidly and somewhat wildly. Many shots bounded off the Kearsage's armor cladding.
Remaining mostly in the Cavalry, Merritt served on the Plains and then as Superintendent of West Point. During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the 8th Corps in the Philippines and captured Manila, after which he was named the first military governor of the Philippines.
With the Union position on Cemetery Ridge in danger of being breached, General Winfield Hancock saw a Confederate brigade advancing toward a gap in his lines. He turned to Colvill, commanding the only infantry in the area, and ordered "Advance, Colonel, and take those colors!"
After Pickens served as Minister to Russia, the family settled at Pickens’ plantation, Edgewood. As owners of 276 slaves, they were strong supporters of slavery and secession. He was made Governor three days before South Carolina seceded.
As the Union troops appeared to be flanked, reinforcements arrived in the form of the @USNavy gunboats USS Lexington and USS Choctaw. With their fire supporting them, Lieb’s men forced the Confederates to withdraw.
The country was outraged. The Confederacy disavowed the raid and withdrew all support of Quantrill and similar guerrilla bands. The local Union commander, General Thomas Ewing, issued General Order #11, forcing the removal of civilians from four Missouri counties on the border.
Quantrill’s force numbered between 300 and 450 men. The town was undefended. The raiders rode into town shortly after 5AM, and immediately began committing mass murder. In four hours, they burned nearly every business in town, and murdered 164 unarmed men and boys.
Born in 1837 in Dover, OH, Quantrill led an unsettled, criminal life before the war, including killing a man in Mendota, IL, robbing homes, and stealing livestock. Settling in Kansas, he decided he favored slavery once he learned he could make money returning runaway slaves.
At a call for volunteers, Hilliker stepped forward and served as an infantryman during the skirmish. While firing at the enemy, he was shot in the face and grievously wounded. Taken to the rear, Hilliker was laid under a tree, his comrades noting that he wouldn't last long.
A graduate of @WestPoint_USMA, he had resigned his commission in 1835 in order to marry Sarah Knox Taylor, whose father, future US President Zachary Taylor, did not approve of her marrying an Army officer. Three months later, they both contracted malaria and Sarah passed away.
