It struck Gen. Oliver Howard’s XI Corps as most of the men were cooking rations for dinner, their rifles stacked and unloaded. They were routed, and began a mostly headlong retreat. Jackson’s attack was stopped only by nightfall and artillery fire from the Union XII Corps.
They were the last line of Confederate defense between the @USNavy and the @CityOfNOLA. The mutually-supporting forts had been built in the 1820's at the direction of President Andrew Jackson (@7thpresident), who knew all too well how New Orleans could be defended.
Immediately the mob began hurling bottles and rocks at the men. The soldiers of the 6th began moving at the double quick, and the mob stepped up their attacks, including firing several shots from surrounding buildings. Follansbee ordered his men to return fire.

Despite his racist views, violence against blacks, and participation in the rebellion against the United States, Hampton remains revered in much of South Carolina. Streets, parks, and schools are named in his honor.
Stuart didn't survive the war, having been killed at the Battle of Yellow Tavern in May, 1864. Remarkably, Stuart's name lived on as the namesake of a high school and a WWII U.S. Army tank, while his father-in-law, who remained loyal to the Union, has largely been forgotten.
With the Union position on Cemetery Ridge in danger of being breached, General Winfield Hancock saw a Confederate brigade advancing toward a gap in his lines. He turned to Colvill, commanding the only infantry in the area, and ordered "Advance, Colonel, and take those colors!"
Jesse James was killed #OTD in 1882. Before beginning his career as a common outlaw, James served with Bloody Bill Anderson's Confederate guerrilla band in the @CivilWar & participated in the Centralia Massacre in which 24 Union soldiers were murdered. #ConfederateHeritageMonth
In recognition of April being #ConfederateHeritageMonth in many southern states, we note that William Pegram was mortally wounded #OTD while commanding a battery of Confederate artillery during the Battle of Five Forks, VA, which was a resounding victory for the Union. #CivilWar
