Despite being established, basically, on the spot in this one issue, the relationship has immediate depth through Logan’s mentorship of Natasha’s courage and his commitment to her safety over the course of a 50-year span. It doesn’t hurt that Jim Lee draws a great hug either. 6/9

This story is notably framed around the concept of ‘time abyss,’ a world-building tactic in fantasy literature which creates a sense of awe and wonder by connecting a story to a suddenly broader time-scale (often through things like ancient artifacts, ruins, texts, etc). 3/9

Dazzler’s personal structure even conforms to that of an epic hero by including a journey to the underworld (she is thought dead and buried) with a story structure that conforms to the monomyth (aka “the hero’s journey.”) 5/7

In the story that unfolds, Rogue chaperones Longshot, Psylocke and Dazzler through a training exercise on Muir Island, which goes poorly. Dazzler leaves in frustration, contemplating quitting, but bumps into Juggernaut and decides to pursue him…which also goes poorly. 2/7

UXM 217-218 represents an important turning point and litmus test for the entire series. In the wake of the mutant massacre, Claremont uses this arc to try out new X-Men, a new direction for the series, and even a new penciler who will go on to redefine the franchise. 1/7

Havok’s desire for peace and tranquility is foregrounded immediately in MTU 69. He simply wants some quiet time alone with Lorna on Muir Island. That this desire is doomed is actually a bit of foreshadowing in itself, as UXM’s Havok will frequently have the rug pulled out. 4/6

Rather than portraying a man desperate to return to action, Claremont portrayed Havok as a reluctant superhero who craved a simpler life in a few minor appearances in UXM. In MTU, however, we get the development of some key Havok character traits that would later define him. 3/6

In Marvel Team-Up 69-70 Claremont crafts a story that might be seen to bridge the gap between silver-age Havok and the Havok that Claremont would later bring back into the fold and cultivate to his greatest character depth in the pages of UXM. 1/6

All of this is to say that Rogue’s gender expression can often be driven or defined by her sexuality which is often defined by her power-set which, in turn, defines aspects of her gender expression. This expression is really important to her, though. 10/13
