This shift from individual character close-ups to more distant shots and group shots (including much more extensive use of long horizontal panels) impacted the storytelling dramatically. 6/9

Byrne was fast, detailed, and downright excellent at doing middle and distant shots, which helped the panels capture a broader (quite literally) sense of space, conflict, and, above all else, collective. Paired with Austin’s precise inks, UXM took on a bold new aesthetic. 5/9

This doesn’t mean Kurt is innocent. He performs non-threatening-ness to reassure Meggan, and draw her in. Describing himself as “cute” & “charming” in contrast to the beastly Hank McCoy, he benefits from Meggan’s concern for his well-being, which inspires her to get closer. 8/11

Kurt’s tickled people like this before. While it reflects his understandable desire to be seen as cute instead of threatening, it’s not okay, especially when consent isn’t clear—like when it involves someone in a relationship, who’s struggled with her emotion-based powers. 5/11

Sure enough, Meggan subverts Kurt’s swashbuckler fantasy of rescuing her from manufactured peril, choosing to fly instead of fall into his arms. Kurt flashes an appreciative smile, then risks a teleport—something that’s been difficult since his recent coma—to tickle Meggan. 4/11

When Meggan asks Kurt what he's doing, he scoops and tosses her, with her face shifting from delighted to baffled. This is typical of Kurt, who's often playful with teammates. Importantly, there's no physical threat to Meggan; she has flight & super-strength. 3/11

The scene begins with “empathic metamorph” Meggan—then the girlfriend of Captain Britain—seeking out Nightcrawler in his gym. He’s solicitous, and she’s her usual combo of sexy and innocently liberated, wearing a string bikini for no particular reason. 2/11

Despite his near ubiquitous presence, for example, Wolverine speaks a lot (in keeping with his confidence and assertiveness), but rarely thinks, which preserves his enigmatic nature whilst also portraying him as an action-oriented individual. 4/7
