The team had seen departures along the way, including Angel in the second Cockrum era, and Rachel in a recent issue, but to have two of the longest-tenured members as well as a beloved viewpoint character go out at the same time was genuinely shocking to readers. 2/6

They don’t really care about mutant or human except that other people do and they can use that to their advantage in order to consolidate wealth and power. They’re playing chess while the Magneto/Xavier factions are locked in checkers, etc. 6/8

Throughout the history of the franchise, mutants are presented as a powerless minority (despite superpowers), forced to either violently oppose humankind or to seek allyship with humankind. They are in a weak and vulnerable position. 2/8

Under Alan Davis on Excalibur, Kurt steps forward into a leadership role, and his posture – in conjunction – becomes far more upright with noticeably less squatting and crawling. Kurt stands tall in Excalibur, both literally and metaphorically. 5/8

The easiest way to perceive this variation is in terms of the Elf/Demon binary. This is to say that illustrators can render Kurt as an adorable plush Elf, or as a Nightmarish demon, depending on the needs of a scene. 2/8

In an era where crossovers can be viewed as detrimental to narrative momentum, we might now look back at the UXM/NM overlaps as a sort of antithetical example of what highly coordinated series interactions can accomplish in a positive light. 9/9

The interaction of the two franchises would taper off significantly once Claremont left NM after issue #54, but for a good number of years the two franchises existed as part of a deeply integrated X-Universe. 8/9

Claremont also, notably, builds a lot of NM stories around Illyana’s conflict with her demonic history, a history that was, of course, first seen in the pages of UXM (and the Magik miniseries). 5/9

We come to see this cross-title storytelling very early on when the New Mutants face the brood for the first time in issue #3, unaware that Xavier is himself Brood. This conflict is only resolved in UXM #167, the first encounter between the two teams. 2/9
