Cultural values, a people’s ethos and their prejudices, are often not explicitly stated but rather carefully handed down each generation through ambiguous yet striking proverbs and idioms. These idioms and proverbs then best illustrate the story a language tells.
More than 70 years ago on Diwali, a painter saw his daughter in a beautiful saree with a candle, her hand guarding its flame to prevent the wind from blowing it out.
One of our favourite finds is the Indian-style, Christian-themed paintings of Angelo da Fonseca (1902–1967). His mingling of cultures and aesthetics did not sit well with the Portuguese Colonial Government, and he was condemned and expelled from Goa.
