@Crunchyroll Your author's assessment is way off. The use of Scouters doesn't hurt Dragon Ball's story, it helps convey the difference in worldview between the Earthlings and aliens. I literally wrote the book on "It's Over 9,000!" That scene has philosophical value and means a lot to fans.

Then the more time he spends with Goku, the more round and white they become. Or in real life, Toriyama changed his appearance as the series evolved.

But yes, that scene occurs at the end of Journey to the West, on the pilgrim's way back to China. There's a lot more Toriyama can borrow from Journey to the West, so ya' never know what he might do.
