Izumo no Okuni

Little is known about Okuni’s life, though she is credited with the creation of kabuki and by extension, Takarazuka. While her acting troupe was entirely female, the shogun later put a ban on women performing, thus transforming kabuki into what it is today.

Elizabeth takes inspiration from three of the most famous fairy tales in existence: Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and of course, Cinderella.

Generally lost on modern audiences is that ‘Cinderella’ is an insult. It means “little ashes”.

Anastasia was a dedicated prankster & was very active to the point that one of her nicknames was “little mischief”.

Her companion Viy is supposedly from folklore, but likely it was an invention by Nikolai Gogol, the author of the novella of the same name.
