Happy birthday to Ursula K. Le Guin who would have been 90 today! I tried to capture in this @ConversationUK piece all that was so remarkable about her (still didn’t do her justice!)

THREAD for @FolkloreThurs’s #Underworld + #underground theme: Katabasis (descent to an underworld) is common in classical myth + lit, e.g. Odysseus, Aeneas, and Orpheus visit the Underworld. But this mythological theme is also prominent in fantasy literature:

THREAD: My 6yo and I just read chapters 14 + 15 of The #Hobbit. He had to hide under the duvet during Smaug’s attack of Eagaroth, but he was delighted with the talking thrush and Bard’s bow and arrow! 🏹 🐉

My 6yo + I got to the Lonely Mountain, saw Bilbo discovering the keyhole to the secret door (guided by the thrush) + enter the mountain to encounter Smaug + his bright hoard! He was enchanted + didn’t want me to stop reading! 🐉

My 6yo + I finished ch.10 of The #Hobbit today. He liked the song of the return of the King under the mountain by the people of Lake-town, but his favourite bit (of course!) was Bilbo’s “Thag you very buch”!

In #Tolkien’s mythology Yavanna is the Giver of Fruits. She is robed in green and loves “all things that grow in the earth”. There are clear resonances with Demeter from classical myth, but who is who? 👇

My 6yo + I followed Bilbo + the Dwarves down the river + just approached Lake-town. He loved the scene of the invisible Bilbo trying to suppress his sneezes + was fascinated by the idea of dragons causing earthquakes!

When I was little I was rather haunted by the hatred in the evil queen’s face, and her vividly-portrayed demise, as it appears in the @ladybirdbooks version of the #SnowWhite! I wasn’t that interested in Snow White herself! #FairyTaleTuesday
J.R.R. #Tolkien’s The #Silmarillion was published #OTD 42 years ago. Here is a majestic depiction by kuliszu of its epic opening, the Ainulindalë: the harmony of the Music of the Ainur and the Discord of Melkor.
