An aerial view of the East gate of Danebury hillfort by the talented David Salariya for the 1986 @hantsconnect guide and on-site signage to illustrate how the multiple ramparts, palisade structure and gates may have worked should they have come under attack

Here’s an epic reimagining of a full-scale Iron Age assault upon (and burning of) the east gate of Danebury hillfort #Hampshire, created by David Salariya for the 1980s @hantsconnect guide and on-site information boards

This late 2nd c mosaic found in a possible #Roman church at Silchester #Hampshire was lovingly recorded in a watercolour by George Edward Fox in 1892😍
It was lifted in 1961 for Reading Museum

An exceptional piece of Durotrigian bling for #FindsFriday
On the morning of 18 July 1811 George Tupper hit a stone whilst ploughing
Subsequent energetic soil clearance revealed this face, a 4th c AD #Roman mosaic portrait of the Trojan prince Ganymede
It was the first bit of the incredible @BignorVilla to be exposed 🤩

Found near #Halnaker #WestSussex before 1970, this life-size bronze arm came from a #Roman statue of a god or emperor and can be seen in the excellent @TheNovium
The level of anatomical realism is simply 🤩🤩
#FindsFriday
Objects made in #Roman Britain from Kimmeridge shale don't always survive that well, so this hand-carved 3rd / 4th century tray (or furniture panel) found in Askerswell, now in @DorsetMuseum, is simply 🤩🤩

As we return from fieldwork we're thinking about Flowers Barrow hillfort #Dorset, captured in this painting (Near Worbarrow Bay 1930) by the supremely talented Philip Leslie Moffat Ward
It's in the ever wonderful @Russell_Cotes Museum #Bournemouth 😍
Happy #HillfortsWednesday!
3) A particularly fine depiction of the Caburn hillfort #Sussex is also by a favourite artist: Eric #Ravilious
Here he was looking out from his studio in 1935, a view which, minus the horse-drawn ploughs, is pretty much the same today 😍

The stunning #Venus mosaic from Hemsworth #Dorset
