7 July 1930. Scottish born writer Arthur Conan Doyle died (aged 71). He created the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes in 1887 when he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and more than fifty short stories about Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson.

28 June 1942. Germany armed forces launched a major offensive to seize the Soviet oil fields in the Caucasus and try and capture the city of Stalingrad.

21 May 1980. The 2nd Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back was released in the USA. Set three years after the events of the first film, it follows the Galactic Empire, under Darth Vader and the Emperor, pursuing Luke Skywalker and the rest of the Rebel Alliance.

15 May 1953. Mike Oldfield was born in Reading. His work blends progressive rock with folk, and electronic new-age music. His biggest commercial success was the 1973 album Tubular Bells, which launched Virgin Records. Its opening was used in the horror film The Exorcist.
