5 December 1965. The Beatles gave their last 2 live concerts in Liverpool at the Empire Theatre. They played 11 songs: I Feel Fine, She’s A Woman, If I Needed Someone, Act Naturally, Nowhere Man, Baby’s In Black, Help!, We Can Work It Out, Yesterday, Day Tripper and I’m Down.

3 December 1947. The play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams (pictured), opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway, New York City, USA. The play starred 23 year old Marlon Brando’s who gave an electrifying performance as Stanley Kowalski.

22 November 1718. The notorious English pirate Blackbeard (Edward Teach] was killed by a Royal Navy boarding squad.

21 November 1898. Artist René Magritte was born in Lessines, Belgium. He became well known for creating a number of witty and thought-provoking images, often depicting everyday objects in an unusual way. His imagery influenced pop art, minimalist art and conceptual art.

20 November 1759. A British fleet, under Admiral Hawke, defeated the French at the Battle of Quiberon Bay. It was one of the greatest victories of the Royal Navy as it ended the possibility of a French invasion.

24 October 1857. Sheffield Football Club, recognised by FIFA as the world’s first official football club, was founded by a group of ex-Cambridge students. The club is now based in Dronfield, Derbyshire and competes in the Northern Premier League Division One South East.

9 October 1834. The Dublin & Kingstown Railway, the first public railway on the island of Ireland opened. It linked Westland Row in Dublin with Kingstown Harbour (Dún Laoghaire) in County Dublin.

28 September 935. Wenceslaus I, the duke of Bohemia since 921, was assassinated. His younger brother, Boleslaus the Cruel, was complicit in the murder. Wenceslaus is now the patron saint of the Czech state and the subject of the well-known Christmas Carol Good King Wenceslas.

23 September 1459. The Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians at the Battle of Blore Heath in the first major battle of Wars of the Roses. At least 2,000 Lancastrians were killed, with the Yorkists losing nearly 1,000 men.
