I often see people be surprised that Wario is taller than Mario. The extend varies between games and models, but it's a very consistent thing, from his debut all the way to today.

Wario is greedy, therefore coins play a much bigger rule in his games. Exploration is also a crucial aspect of his games, since he is a treasure hunter and will look everywhere he can to find some loot, be it coins or treasure.
Related to that, Wario is far more a brute. He'll shoulder charge, ground pound, toss around, piledrive, shake and do many other things to the mooks in his games, where as Mario only uses as much force as is truly need.
