#Cleckheaton #Yorkshire in 1889? I particularly like his work depicting the #coast. In WW1 he was involved in transferring dazzle camouflage designs onto ships for the Royal Navy. #maritme
Once a thriving fishing community the village of #Staithes has been described as ‘a jumble of whitewashed, pantile-roofed cottages clinging to the hillside, threaded through with narrow ginnels leading to the pretty harbour.’ This #Victorian image shows it perfectly. #Yorkshire

Mary Ellen Best was born in York in 1809 and died in Germany in 1891. She worked mainly in watercolours painting scenes of domestic life. #York Civic Trusts website features this relatively unknown #artist who created such a useful record of house interiors. #art #Yorkshire
